Organizing Refrigerators

Before you can begin to organize your refrigerator, you need to give it a thorough cleaning. That means taking everything out. You may find yourself surprised at what has been hiding deep inside your refrigerator. Throw out anything that you find that has gone bad or is past its expiration date, and if you have multiple bottles of the same item, combine them to help save space and organize your fridge perfectly.

Once you have everything out of your refrigerator, pull out the drawers and give them a good wash. Mix hot water and white vinegar in a bottle and spray the refrigerator and wipe it down. Vinegar and hot water are food safe, and an excellent option for removing any stuck-on food spills and odors.

Clean Your Fridge

Now that your refrigerator is clean, you are ready to start putting things back inside. But first, line your drawers and shelves. Press and seal plastic wrap works great for this because it stays in place. You can also use any other type of shelf liner, or even just paper towels. This way, if you have a spill or a leak, you can remove the liner and add a new one.

DIY Fridge Organization

Chances are that you use baskets or containers to organize other areas of your home. Why should your refrigerator be any different? Use the drawers that come with the fridge for their intended purpose. The temperature is set specifically for those food items in those compartments.

Fridge Containers To Help Organize Your Fridge

You can buy clear plastic containers specifically designed for refrigerator use, that can be stacked on top of each other. You can also use plastic storage baskets or containers that you already have. Keep like items together. For example, put your shredded cheese and blocks of cheese in a container together.

How To Store Meat In The Fridge

Make sure that you keep your uncooked meat on the bottom shelf of your refrigerator to avoid contaminating other food. Likewise, items that spoil easily like yogurt and sour cream should be stored on the top shelf.  I actually use a container in the door to hold the majority of my condiments. That way they don’t get knocked over or roll around.

Organizing Freezers

Having a well-stocked freezer is great, as long as you can find what you need. And it’s not good when the food gets so buried it becomes freezer burnt.

Freeze your food flat

Flat items are much easier to stack and store. If you are freezing ground meat, put it in your freezer bag, mash it down flat, and freeze it. The same goes for any soups, sauces, or chili that you might need to freeze.

Freeze your food in portions that you use

It seems easier to throw that family-size pack of chicken breasts in the freezer together. However, you end up with wasted food if you only cook two to three chicken breasts at a time.

Freezer Organization Tips

Date and label everything that you package and put in the freezer. Spaghetti sauce and chili can look pretty similar once they are frozen solid. Make sure you pull out the correct item and the oldest portion, by labeling and dating items before freezing them.

Freezer Storage Tips

Store like with like, just as you do in other areas of your home. Keep frozen vegetables together in the freezer. When you buy new ones, place the new bags on the bottom and the older ones on the top. This way, you are practicing first in, first out, and the older items get used first.

Get Your Freezer Organized

Take everything out of the box. The boxes that frozen foods come in can take up a lot of space, leaving you with less room for food. Take the food out of the boxes, and clip the directions. If you need them, tape the directions to the packaging.
