DIY Laundry Detergent

Laundry detergent is far from the cheapest thing to buy anywhere. Even the off brands cost an arm and a leg nowadays. Wouldn’t it be easier if you could make your own DIY Laundry Detergent at home and not only save money but know exactly what is in your laundry detergent?

Guess what… You can Make Your Own DIY Laundry Detergent!

My friend shared his mama’s recipe for DIY Laundry Detergent with me and now I’m going to share it with you. It’s incredibly simple to make and 1 batch lasts for a very long time. I honestly can’t believe I haven’t made my own laundry detergent before.

Homemade Laundry Detergent

  • 2 bars Fels-Naptha (grated fine)
  • 1 small bottle Purex crystals
  • 1 4 lb. 12 oz box borax detergent booster
  • 1 55 oz. box arm & hammer super washing soda

Mix well to combine all the ingredients in a large, sealable container.

When you’re ready to do a load of laundry use 2 tablespoons per load.

You can easily double, triple, or quadruple (or more) the recipe to make even more DIY Laundry Detergent. If you don’t have space for all the excess you can give some away. I know I would never turn down free laundry detergent and don’t think others will either. You can also experiment with fabric safe oils for an aromatherapy effect. The possibilities for scents are endless, limited only by your own imagination.

DIY Laundry Detergent Tip:

Here’s a tip from one of our readers to make the DIY process even better. Thanks for sharing your great tip, Margaret!

Great recipe. An easier way to deal with Fels Naptha is instead of grating it, cut bars into 1inch slices. Spread on plate and microwave 1minute. Move around on the plate. Microwave 1minute again. It will begin to look foamy but it is dry. Move again and microwave 30 seconds. Cool. It will crumble into tiny pieces.
