Best Canned Cat Food For Cats

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of AvoDerm Natural pet foods for IZEA. All opinions are 100% mine.

I’ll admit I can be a little over the top when it comes to being a cat mom. I think of Phoebe as my child, so I treat him that way too. I monitor his bathroom habits, do weekly ear, nail and gums checks, and stay on top of what the best foods on the market are. When I say best foods I mean those that have more nutritional ingredients than filler and the ones that deliver everything my guy needs to thrive. That means reading the labels and knowing what to look for.

What Ingredients Are Important for My Cat?

Undoubtedly the most important ingredient, a named protein, should be the first thing listed on a cat food label. Chicken, fish, turkey, etc.. are examples of named protein sources. Cats are obligate carnivores and need meat to survive. Ideally, your cat should get 2 grams of protein per pound daily. So, if you have a 10-pound cat, (s)he will need around 20 grams of protein daily to thrive.

Other ingredients that play a key role in your cat’s health are Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids. These are found in several oils and marine protein sources. Omega-3 and Omega-6 essential fatty acids, like those found in avocados, improve pet skin and coat health, reduce inflammation, and lower blood pressure, along with other benefits.

Finally, you want to look for a food that is packed with beneficial vitamins and minerals as well as Taurine. Taurine is an essential amino acid that cat’s need for normal heart function, good vision, and digestion. Vitamins and minerals need little introduction as we all know how vital they are for any life.

But… Before Switching Cat Food Brands…

It sounds so easy to switch a cat’s food, doesn’t it? Just feed them the new brand instead of the old one. The problem with that is by abruptly changing your pet’s diet you can inadvertently cause stomach distress and malnutrition. That’s the last thing we want, so we need to take our time when switching to a new pet food. That means not throwing out the usual food just yet.

The best (i.e. safest) way to switch pet food brands is gradual. Start by mixing a small amount of the new food with the current food. Gradually increase the amount of new food while reducing the amount of current food over a period no less than 5 days. We’re on day 6 now and tomorrow Phoebe will be completely switched over to his new AvoDerm Natural meal plan. I think if he had it his way he would have been strictly AvoDerm Natural by day 2, but I wanted to be safe.

Why We Switched to AvoDerm Natural cat food

I found that AvoDerm Natural offers everything Phoebe needs to thrive in a formula he wants nothing more than to devour. As soon as he sees the can he’s doing laps around my feet begging to be fed. After a few accidents (tails getting stepped on, humans being tripped, etc…) I’ve learned to open the can in another room, so I have time between the top popping and him charging in ready to eat. It doesn’t matter how many rooms are between us either, as soon as he hears that lid come off he comes running.

Another reason we made the switch was that AvoDerm Natural carefully selects the suppliers of their ingredients, making sure only the highest-quality California avocados are going into AvoDerm Natural pet food. I also appreciate that AvoDerm Natural pet foods are made in small batches instead of being mass-produced. I definitely want a company who puts quality above all else to be the one feeding my fur baby. You can Switch now on Amazon.

But… Avocados?

I’m sure it’s a little strange thinking of feeding a cat, an obligate carnivore, avocados, but Phoebe absolutely loves AvoDerm Natural pet food. It makes sense to use avocados in pet food since they’re packed with nearly 20 vitamins and minerals and happen to be a nutrient booster that helps pets absorb more of the nutrients they need.

I’ve already started to notice a difference in Phoebe’s coat. It’s gotten a lot shinier, his skin isn’t nearly as dry (he was starting to get a little dandruff action going on), and he’s shedding a lot less. All of this makes me happy, especially the shedding thing. No more hairballs for either of us!

This is a brand I can 100% vouch for which means you should learn more about them and make the switch to a better pet food now too. AvoDerm Natural also has food that both you and your dog will love! Switch now on Amazon.

  1. My sister has 3 cats I wonder if she knows about this cat food. I will mention this to her. She is always looking to make sure her babies are well-taken care and are receiving the best in food and care.

  2. I made the switch to a better pet food for my Yorkie a year and a half ago. The grained food was causing him to overeat and then vomit too much. Once we made the switch to a grain free food that was easy to digest, he is healthier now. When I took him to the vet about his vomiting, he said the grain free was the best food for him and diagnosed him with acid reflux. He takes meds for that and now he is feeling better.

  3. This sounds like a great option for cat food. We don’t have any cats but I know my cat moms would love to hear about this. I will be sure to pass this information along.

  4. We do not own a cat but I have friends who would be happy to read this. I bet it will be really helpful for them to know this.

  5. We adopted two rescue cats last year, and the foster told us that picking a healthy food is so important. She said she has seen so many issues in cats as a result of undesirable ingredients.

  6. I am sure that making sure Sal had a good diet (she’s actually on a vet prescribed one so it’s nice and expensive) has done her the world of good. I wouldn’t swap the pennies for the world as long as I know she’s getting the best.

  7. Nutrition is so vitally important for our pets. I remember when I was a kid, we bought the cheapest food available for our poor dogs – it was all fat and filler. We’re lucky that there are so many good choices available today.

  8. I have a friend with several cats, and she just started using this food about a week ago. So far, her cats love it. Excellent advice on how to switch foods, too.

  9. I am not a cat person but have two rescue dogs and I am careful to give them nutritious food but your cat is getting an amazing brand. If I ever get a cat i will look for that food.
