Should You Test Your DNA While Using a Treadmill?

DNA testing is quickly becoming a huge trend. There’s no wonder why that happens: with a simple gesture, we can find out so much useful information about us, mainly about our genetic heritage. That can help us better understand the way we function and what we should do to enjoy a healthy life.

What is DNA and why would we want to get it tested? The deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA, for short) is the bearer of our genetic code, which we inherit from our parents, grandparents, etc. It is responsible for many things in our lives, such as the color of our eyes, hair, and skin, but also various personality features. Every cell in our bodies contains our DNA, and you can’t have the same DNA as another person – except an identical twin.

The testing is pretty simple: specialists analyze a sample of your saliva, blood, hair or skin and they find out your entire genetic history, including possible health concerns or paternity issues (if any). Nowadays, we have home kits for DNA testing, which makes things even more convenient: we can order the kit, have it delivered to our door and then follow the instructions.

There are different sets on the market – some require you to spit in a bag, others may ask you to scrape your cheeks. When I first read about this home-testing possibility, I thought: “Well, that’s something you can do anytime you’re ready or have some saliva or sweat present – for instance, when running on the treadmill in my house!” Collecting the sample takes just a few seconds so it won’t hold up the workout. Besides, DNA testing is the new thing of the fitness industry, since experts have proven that our genes dictate the way we respond to exercising and dieting.

Knowing how you react to certain foods or types of exercises allows you to tailor your training plan according to particular needs, which I believe it is fantastic. It’s the next level of working out and staying fit and healthy! The result, which usually comes back in four to eight weeks, tells you everything about your sensitivity to salt, carbohydrates, saturated fat, lactose or gluten (you may be intolerant to those and not even know it!). It also reveals your individual vitamin needs and how your body processes caffeine and alcohol.

But an extended DNA test can tell you even more. Have you ever thought if you have a natural aptitude for certain endurance sports such as running, swimming or cycling? Or maybe you would be more cut out for weightlifting? Do you have aerobic potential or not? Have you ever asked yourself how quickly (or slowly) your body recovers between workout sessions?

Having all that information at your disposal could help you not only understand how your body works and reacts, but also realize what you can do to improve your health.  As I’ve learned on, motivation is essential when it comes to eating correctly and exercising; what could stand as better motivation than the science supporting your body which now you can understand and use to your advantage?

So I’d say take the test – preferably during your morning treadmill workout when you haven’t even brushed your teeth yet – and wait for the conclusions. Discretion is guaranteed, and the result might change your life for the better. You can exploit it any way you want: discuss it with a specialist or a professional trainer – or share the experience with friends and family, encouraging them to take one as well, mainly if they care about their long-term well-being.
