Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls has been around for some time, but only recently has it come to the seven cities. Raleigh, NC, Washington D.C., and Rehobeth, DE were the closest locations before. Now, foodies from Suffolk to Virginia Beach can find the iconic Lobster Rolls right on Shore Drive.

Growing up in Hampton Roads, seafood has always been a big part of my life. Lobster, however, hasn’t. I grew up on blue crabs, shrimp, scallops, clams, and oysters because they were local fare. So, it goes without saying that lobster rolls were new territory for me. I didn’t really know what to expect. I have eaten lobster before, but never on bread. At first, it sounded crazy but as soon as I saw Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls menu I knew I had to try it.

Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls

Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls offers up their iconic lobster rolls in several forms.

  • CLASSIC LOBSTER ROLL – Served chilled with mayo and lemon butter
  • CONNECTICUT ROLL – Served warm, tossed in butter
  • LOBSTER SALAD ROLL – Served chilled tossed in celery, mayo & lemon dressing
  • LOBSTER BLT ROLL – Lobster, bacon, lettuce, tomato
  • SHRIMP ROLL – Jumbo shrimp tossed in mayo, celery & lemon
  • THE BAR HARBOR -Choose any Mason’s Famous Roll and get meat from a 1 1/4 lb. lobster – including tail

I tried the Connecticut Roll because I love butter and don’t like mayo on much of anything. I can honestly say it was love at first bite. From the rich buttery goodness of the lobster and the toasted split-top roll to the tender heaps of lobster piled high – it was a mouth-pleasing delight.

Beyond the Lobster Roll

The clam chowder was loaded with perfectly bite-sized bits of potato and plenty of clams. The chowder was just the right consistency – not too thick and not at all thin. The flavor was delicious and coming from me, a red chowder fan, that means a lot. I didn’t try the crab bisque myself, but my step-mom was smiling from ear to ear while savoring hers.

The service was excellent and the staff is very friendly. They answered our questions and offered suggestions based on what we liked. We were taken care of immediately and the food was ready in a very timely fashion. It was presented neatly and I appreciated the extra care put into making sure the soup cups weren’t overflowing so there were no spills.

We enjoyed our food on the back patio where there was ample seating and warm fires to make it even more inviting.

There is plenty of indoor seating as well, and even a little alcove for a more private setting.

Also inside, you can buy Mason’s merchandise and an assortment of beverages – adult and all age friendly. I was surprised and impressed by the variety.

There’s truly something for everyone at Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls and I can’t wait to go back and try more of their famous lobster rolls. They have kid-friendly menu items too, so be sure to stop in when you’re in the area. If you’re not in Virginia Beach, then you should make plans to treat yourself to Mason’s Famous Lobster Rolls soon! This is one meal you don’t want to miss.
