When I was a kid my parents would host parties for nearly every occasion. The first day of summer, every holiday and birthday, and even some just because cookouts. There was always a ton of people and plenty of food to go around. For as long as I can remember, that was what I wanted for my life – to show others how much I appreciate them. It gives me so much pleasure to put a smile on the face of my friends and my favorite way to do that is by feeding them. In fact, once this dreary weather clears up I have a super fun adults-only field day planned and I already know what’s on the menu.

Now, a lot of people swear by cooking their bratwurst in beer. I’m {gasp} not a beer fan and I’m not overly fond of the twangy flavor brats get from being cooked in it. Because of that, I wanted to flavor my bratwurst my way, so I picked up a pack of Johnsonville Original Bratwurst from Walmart. Johnsonville is my Brat brand of choice since they only use premium pork from US and Canadian farms and are made in the US Heartland.

Are you intimidated by the thought of making chutney? Don’t be! It is ridiculously easy to put this together and the results are out of this world good. These are seriously the best Bratwursts you’ll ever eat. They’re juicy and packed with the flavor that you’re going to find every time with Johnsonville.

Okay, let’s get this show on the road! To start making these, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet. Take one or two large onions and slice them into rings. Once the oil is hot, carefully add the onions and stir them around for about 4 minutes. Then add your bratwursts.

Brown the brats on both sides, cooking for about 3 minutes on each side. You just want to give them that nice coloring, not fully cook them yet.

Once they’re browned, slowly add 1 1/4 cups of apple juice to the pan. At this point, the heat should be set at a medium temperature. You want to bring it to a boil and let it roll for 3 minutes. Then immediately cover the pan and reduce the heat to low. Cook the bratwursts covered for 10 minutes.

best bratwursts step 3

Uncover the pan and let it simmer for 10 minutes while the bulk of the remaining liquid evaporates and is absorbed. Mix everything together, flipping the brats around in the chutney.

Put your bratwurst on a bun and top it off with a few spoonfuls of the chutney from the pan.

Each bite is the perfect balance of sweet and savory. I have yet to meet anyone that didn’t think these were the best bratwurst ever. What do you think? How do you like your bratwurst?

I used apple juice because it makes the recipe that much easier (and quick). However, if you want to take your brats even closer to perfection then you can use sliced apples. You’ll need to adjust the cooking time by about 20 minutes. I’d recommend cooking the apples first, as they’ll take longer than the onions and you want to develop a sauce for the onions to simmer in so that they don’t burn.
