Hamburger Steak & Gravy

hamburger steak & gravy - country styleAs much as I complain about living in the country, there are some things that make me secretly love it. If I wasn’t born and raised in the sticks then I wouldn’t have an arsenal of country style recipes at my disposal. I’m talking about the good old-fashion soul food you won’t find at any 5-star restaurant. The food that southern grandmas have been feeding their families for centuries. I can make all the fancy meals in the world, but none of them can touch good old-fashioned country/homestyle cooking. That’s what this hamburger steak & gravy recipe is and because it’s so good I had to share my recipe.

Since my family’s recipes aren’t what I, or most people, consider healthy I don’t make them too often. Then there are times when life just isn’t going right and the only thing to fix it is homestyle cooking. I did choose to use lean meat to cut out some of the fat and instead of bread, I piled the patties and gravy on mashed red potatoes. Now, you may call me a cheater here, but I used gravy packets to keep it simple and quick. They were like $0.30 each at the grocery store and perfect for what I need. Since I used lean 97% lean ground beef there weren’t enough drippings to make a homemade gravy. If you have some on hand though, by all means – make your own! You can saute some onions and mushrooms to jazz up the gravy if you’d like. Country cooking is all about adding your own flair to the mix.

Serve the hamburger steaks up with fresh snapped green beans and you have a country dinner fit for any southerner. I love that this is easy to throw together, so even if you’re in a rush you can have a homestyle country meal with little effort.
