Dollar Tree LOVE Sign Valentine’s Day DIY

Does anyone else get absolutely giddy walking into the Dollar Tree when there’s a holiday around the corner? Right now my local store is packed with not only Valentine’s Day DIY stuff but St. Patrick’s Day and Mardi Gras goodies as well. I went in with the intention of buying a few glass jars and came out with 6 bags full of all kinds of things. It’s like going to Hobby Lobby or Michaels without that voice screaming at you to budget yourself.

One of the first things I noticed when I walked in was these adorable unfinished LOVE signs. I’m not 100% sure what they’re made of but I think it’s an extra thick or heavily layered chipboard. They look like wood which was a big draw for me. I snagged a bunch of them and wanted to share one of my finished signs. It was so easy to make and I just love how it looks hanging on the wall. If it ever stops raining I want to hang it on the outer door so the bells get some use!

Dollar Tree Has All The Materials for this DIY Valentine’s Day Project!

Aside from the sign and the heart door hanger, I used pink and white acrylic paints, glitter, hot glue and beige yarn for this project. You can find all of this at your Dollar Tree if you don’t already have it on hand. That means the most this DIY Valentine’s Day project will set you back is $6 (with yarn, glitter and paint leftover!).

Decorating the Dollar Tree Valentine’s Day Sign

I started by painting the entire sign with white paint. And then, the glitter on the O while the paint was still wet, tapping the baggy to control the flow.

Next, I painted the pink over the white on the L, V, and E while it was still tacky. I wanted a streaky finish on top, which I got! I painted the sides of the sign with pink (except the O) and white (just the O). Then, I set it aside to dry, which took about an hour. It was probably dry earlier, but I didn’t want to risk it.

Finishing it Up…

I squeezed the top of the Valentine’s Day heart door hanger with bells so it narrowed a bit. This allowed me to fit it perfectly edge to edge in the O. If you don’t mind some overhang then you can skip that part.

I hot glued the hanger to the sign focusing the hot glue on the top parts of the upper heart and the bottom point. Then I added lines of hot glue, a few inches at a time, around the edge of the sign and put the yarn on. This added depth to the sign and helped the O stand out. Before it was all running together and I wasn’t feeling it.

If you’re looking for a cheap and easy way to decorate for Valentine’s Day then you can’t beat this Dollar Tree DIY. You can even get your kids involved as long as you monitor them with the hot glue.
