I think it’s pretty clear by now that I’m 100% addicted to all things Cricut. Working with them has been an eye-opening experience and I just can’t stop making stuff! .making stuff! But there are actually other top t-shirt making machines out there. With Christmas coming it’s time for my all-time favorite movie to start playing on repeat. If the t-shirt we’re making today didn’t give it away, the movie is A Christmas Story.

Why is A Christmas Story My Favorite Holiday Movie?

A Christmas Story is a laugh riot right from the start, from the Bumpus Family’s dogs to the Old Man’s neverending battle with the furnace. One of the most iconic moments from the movie is the delivery of a “Major Award” – aka the Leg Lamp. The Old Man is quick to put his prize on display but his wife hates it. Hilarity ensues and the movie continues to please throughout.

If you’ve never watched A Christmas Story then you must add it to your queue. Now, let’s talk about how to make this DIY Christmas shirt, shall we?

Supplies for A Christmas Story Shirt:

  • Cricut Cutting Machine
  • Iron-on Vinyl (colors I used: black, parchment, glitter gold, red, brown)
  • Weeding Tool
  • EasyPress 2 with Mat
  • Your Favorite Blank Shirt
  • Fra-Gee-Lay design (click here to open in Design Space)

Before I tell you how to make this A Christmas Story shirt, let me point out that I missed the first step on my first try. There was supposed to be a base for the leg lamp and by the time I remembered it, I was already 10 seconds into transferring the leg.

That kind of makes me sound creepy, huh?!

Since my shirt still looks good I decided to roll with it, but for future applications, I’ll go with the lamp base. It adds a little extra to the design.

How to Make A Christmas Story Shirt

First, open the design in Design Space and cut the layers (remember to mirror them!). I find it easiest to pre-load my cutting mats with vinyl so everything goes smoothly. It helps to have several varying grip cutting mats on hand, especially if you use multiple layers in your Cricut projects. Remember: Iron-On Vinyl should be placed shiny side down and on the cutting mat. Weed the layers and prepare to transfer them.

Next, heat up the EasyPress 2 according to the directions in the heat guide. Use the Heat Guide directions to determine when to remove the carrier sheet as well (hot, warm, or cold peel). Place the shirt on the EasyPress mat and use the EasyPress 2 to remove any wrinkles. on both sides. Allow the shirt to cool.

The first layer should be the lamp base. Lay the flesh-colored leg on the shirt and use that as a guide for where to position the base. Remove the leg from the shirt and use the EasyPress 2 to apply the base. Then repeat with the leg, followed by the black layer with the fishnets and lampshade base.

Next, adjust the EasyPress 2 for the glitter vinyl (use the heat guide again!) and line up the glitter vinyl layer over the lampshade and lamp base and apply. Finish by positioning the words on the shirt and using a blank carrier sheet to protect the design that’s already affixed to the shirt.

That’s all there is to it! Pin this project for later and be sure to share with your friends.
